Emily Dodds Powell’s practice focuses on complex civil litigation, white collar criminal defense, and investigations.  Emily has handled complex civil matters in state and federal court for both plaintiffs and defendants, including employment disputes and cases involving allegations of fraud, Consumer Protection Act violations, breach of contract, and business torts. 

Emily also represents businesses, company employees, and witnesses in government investigations and white collar criminal cases, including environmental, health care, and government contracting matters.

In addition to her litigation practice, Emily conducts internal investigations for private companies and government agencies.

Emily’s recent matters have included:

  • Obtained dismissal for online travel agencies in consumer class action alleging RICO and consumer protection violations arising out of charges for “taxes and fees” on travel bookings and successfully moved to compel arbitration in related action.
  • Represented nonprofit in arbitration involving claims for breach of contract brought by multiple plaintiffs. Obtained a favorable arbitration award resulting in the complete dismissal of the plaintiffs’ claims and a significant financial award for the client.
  • Obtained dismissal for national online travel agency in breach of contract action brought by national commercial real estate firm seeking compensation for work performed in acquisition of company’s Seattle campus.
  • Represented publicly-elected Washington State Auditor in trial alleging wire fraud, money laundering, perjury, tax fraud, and false statements.
  • Represented employees of government defense contractor in False Claims Act investigation.
  • Represented health care facility in False Claims Act investigation regarding Medicare billing.
  • Conducted investigations for government agencies regarding misconduct and breach of confidentiality allegations.

Prior to joining the firm, Emily worked in the litigation department of Paul Hastings LLP in San Francisco, California.  Before entering private practice, she served as a law clerk to United States District Judge William B. Shubb in the Eastern District of California.  Emily had previously interned with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sacramento, California.

Emily graduated from Harvard Law School, where she served as Notes Editor and Outreach Chair for the Harvard Law Review.  She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley in Economics and Philosophy.
